Speaking in Wings (2024)
A metamorphic sound performance with butterflies in Copenhagen Zoo’s Tropical Hall.
Speaking in Wings is foregrounding butterflies and their perception of the world via sonic performance art. I am interested in working with, learning from and directing attention to these winged insects and our complex, entangled (human/lepidopteran) relationship. This has lead me to a partnership with Copenhagen Zoo. Here I have learned about and made audio recordings of the insects and their life cycles. My creative process is directly informed both by entomological research and by embodied encounters with the insects.
In August 2024, I shared my findings in the tropical hall by inviting zoo guests to join a sound art walk with butterflies in the spotlight.
Some butterflies hear/communicate through their wings and I responded to this via speculative compositions involving field recordings of the butterflies and processed vocalizations mimicking the movement and cyclical lifespan of butterflies.
Created in collaboration with performer Claus Otto, composer/sound artist Alistair MacDonald - with piano recordings by Baichuan Hui. Costumes by Charlotte Bodil Hermansen.
